I understand the feeling. I don’t know if I’ll follow through with my actions because I find myself asking “What’s the point?” quite often when it comes my writing and this isn’t going to help motivate me. I already downloaded my posts that I invested a lot of work into. That combined with stuff that I have written but haven’t completed/edited, I have a fair amount to make a decent blog. But once again, what’ s the point?

I’m disappointed; in particular because the FP layout is really unuser friendly. I enjoy the general community here and even on the FP but often I would get the gist of the news from the FP and then come here to chat and that was in part because the FP comments are so glitchy.

I think anything outside of editors posting (i.e. FP), it’s considered personal. The wording they use is “user-generated content”, which includes Oppo.

I just went into ‘edit’ in the article, ‘selected all’ and then pasted it onto a Word Document. The photo sizes are different, but it saves the hyperlinks and whatnot so it should be easier to re-create the posts when I’m ready.

The thing that would be nice, absent privacy concerns, is a central place for at least email contacts... it seems like a worthwhile pursuit. And, just can’t be that expensive to host.

I’d guess G/O Media’s concern is more of “liability” in a world where Section 230 protection goes away (thanks to Twitter and FB...)

I’m gonna shift into aviation content. I’ve been airline for the last 17 years and returning into general aviation stuff as a fun side thing to do, as I just like flying, has been a real eye-opener and a true challenge ainsce I haven’t flown without traffic-control watching out for me in that time . Probably on to Wordpress with it , as i’ve also got a fiction writing thing in hibernation there as well I plan to bring back to life.

Look folks, times and things change. It’s like any online game that requires a lot of time to level up, but then goes away whtn the new version comes out and you have to begin again. Like re-starting the Gran Tourismo garage every time they release a new version of the game. All that effort and setups and parts, no longer cared for, not useful, and nothing to show for the time spent. So I’m gonna do something that does make something for the effort. Probably start building planes in a year.

I’m with you pal, I wanted to lay the groundwork for bigger and better things here on Oppo. Starting a WordPress isn’t a terrible idea, but there’s something to be said about every post on here having an equal shot of blowing up and being seen by everyone. That, and not everything is about cars.

You could also make YouTube content, that’s what I’m looking to do, though that’s easier said than done. It’s a sad sad sad sad day.

It varies so much per post, and when the posts go live, too. Some of them are just eye rollers and I scroll on by (posts and comments ), but others turn into delightful bar banter and I’ll find myself going back and refreshing the section over several hours. When it’s good, it’s real good.

For what it’s worth, I quite enjoy your sensible contributions, but it may be a subconscious bias . I also own a Fiesta ST and we both live in places where dodging moose is a standard daily concern. I solved the signal to noise issue (e.g., the uncommon but still occasional edgelord burner replies) by deciding to not open my Kinja notifications. At all. Ever again. That Kinja itself broke down entirely several times before I made that move didn’t hurt, either. It’s probably been a few years since I’ve checked for any individual comment replies. If I’m feeling feisty I’ll go back and check a post a day or two later, but otherwise it’s been pure turn and burn bliss.

Oppo was my “ugh, what’s the point,” by contrast, but only because I never felt that I had much to offer in terms of community content. My usual routine was to scroll through the Oppo posts maybe every 4-5 days to get a feel for any new and interesting Weird Shit going on , but I never made the push to put anything out there myself .

I regret it now. There are a lot of great people here, even if I never really interacted with many of you on Oppo itself . And there are a lot of great people on Jalopnik proper, too .
